A Few Words

About Me

Mareli Janse van Rensburg

Inspired by nature

My love for creating art is deeply stemmed in my roots. I was raised in the Baviaanskloof surrounded with animals and natures beauty.

Being fortunate enough to have lived on the farm my art and designs are heavily influenced by nature. I also believe that through nature I learned to observe everything around me better. This ability to ‘look’ and ‘see deeper’ has given me the opportunity to emphasize moments that are often missed in photography.

How the artist and the designer became one

I studied Fine Art at Stellenbosch University.

While I was studying, I placed second in the 2015 Sasol New Signatures Competition.

In 2017 I finished my degree and started teaching art classes in Durbanville, Cape Town.

I learned a lot through teaching because each student is different and I covered a wide range of mediums from charcoal, watercolour and acrylic to oil painting. Each student also chose their own subject matter so this challenged me to create art works that I would have never done on my own.

I started to love oil painting and I got into the top 500 of the Sanlam portraits awards in 2019.

In 2019 I also was part of the International Watercolour exhibition which was hosted in South Africa and my watercolour ranked 5th out of 150 paintings from 26 countries.

I have always been interested in design although, the line between art and design was always blurred to me. Between studying and teaching I did a lot of freelance design work and in the end of 2019 I decided to study Graphic design at UCT and I loved every minute of it. This just refined my design skills and gave me confidence to pursue it even further.

I have since done product packaging design, marketing campaigns, textile design and illustration.
